Teens suspended after altercation with teacher
LAKE STATION | Two teens who reportedly fought with a 54-year-old substitute teacher outside school have received 10-day suspensions, Lake Station schools Superintendent Dan DeHaven said.
One of the Edison Junior-Senior High School students is a senior, the other is a junior. Both boys, whom officials have declined to name pending the filing of formal charges, are 17 years old, DeHaven said.
"The students will be afforded due process, including a hearing, and at that point we'll decide what to do," DeHaven said.
Substitute teacher Hiram Alamo, of Lake Station, reportedly was knocked unconscious during the Wednesday incident with the teens.
Alamo's face remains swollen and black, blue and purple and he suffered nerve damage to his hand and wrist, according to his wife, Yolanda Alamo.
Because Alamo is a substitute teacher and doesn't have a contract with the school, his status with the school district has remained unchanged, DeHaven said.
"Typically we don't fire substitute teachers, we just don't call them," he said.
Lake Station Police Chief Mike Stills said police interviewed everyone involved Friday and plan to present the results of those interviews to prosecutors today to let them decide what charges if any are to be filed.
The teens say the substitute teacher followed them and they were just defending themselves after he challenged them outside one of the student's homes, Stills said.
The teacher, who suffered numerous injuries including a gash to his head, told police the teens followed him and then retaliated because of a disciplinary incident at school.
DeHaven confirmed that Alamo, who had recently been working as a substitute science teacher, previously had referred one of the students to the principal's office.
Todd Conover, a lawyer representing the senior boy, said when the facts are made known about the incident, it will clear the teens of any charges.
"This was purely self-defense on their part and there was provocation," Conover said,
He intends to file a complaint for declaratory relief, a temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction, which would have the effect of placing his client back in school.
Conover said the other teenager also has retained an attorney, Alex Dominguez.
Dominguez couldn't be reached for comment.

Stamford teacher collapses, dies at school
STAMFORD, Conn. - Counseling is being offered at a Stamford middle school after a 63-year-old math teacher collapsed and died in his classroom.
Eighth-grade students found Vincent Sheridan unresponsive in his Cloonan Middle School classroom early Monday, and he was pronounced dead at Stamford Hospital.
His cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
School officials say Sheridan was a teacher for 37 years and was nicknamed "Sarge" because of his disciplined classroom and willingness to lead.
They say students and fellow teachers were stunned by Sheridan's death, and that counselors and psychologists are working with people to help them cope with their grief.

Stand up for standing up!
Can you make allowances for the students in your classroom? Some students concentrate better if they are given the freedom to move a little or even to stand up, like you see in the picture. If you're a stress-free teacher, it won't bother you or the other students in the classroom. Stress will decrease; learning and fun will increase. You will know precisely how to make such allowances.
Teamwork
Parents and teachers should be on the same team! Wake up. It's about the children, not your competing interests.
